To make sure that the cast is really able to ‘cut loose’ during this dance-heavy production, experienced choreographer Kim Hurley is there to take them through all the steps (pun absolutely intended – sorry, it’s Friday). Kim is the Artistic Director for Generation Dance Studio and specializes in jazz, lyrical, hip hop and musical theatre. She is definitely no newcomer to Keyano Theatre, having choreographed All Shook Up (2011), Cabaret (2015) as well as choreographed and starred in Hometown… The Musical (2013), . She has also won the 2011 and 2012 “Create Award” aboard Carnival Cruise Lines with Celebrity Dance for her choreography as well as being the Artistic Director for “Northern Dance Off” Festival. Kim is excited to be working on Footloose The Musical – “a choreographers bucket list musical!”
Have you had a lot of experience of working with community actors? Is it different from working with professionals?
I enjoy watching community actors transform into amazing artists. Professionals already have an idea of what to expect but watching the “first time” actor learn and grow is a highlight. This is a heavy dance show – my involvement is extensive. Time frames only allow for instruction the first few weeks. The hard work will begin as we clean and correct movement.
This is an incredibly varied cast, both in age and experience levels. How is working with a cast like this?
“I am grateful to have experienced dancers on the cast which helps when staging choreography. In addition, the production team is top-notch and it makes life a lot easier when everyone is organized and prepared. All the expectations have been laid out and it helps to have everyone’s commitment right off the top!
I really enjoy watching the actors grow. Majority of the ones I have worked with have never really had an opportunity to run a full jam packed musical. Its refreshing to see new people come out and participate. Comparing an audition to the final product always puts a smile on my face as we nurture and witness true artists form. A show like Footloose offers a big cast, lively music and fast paced dancing. The need for a great family show will be appreciated in our community!”
